Guwahati: In a District Road Safety Committee meeting chaired by District Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha, held on Monday, measures to address 33 black spots across Kamrup Metropolitan District, including Guwahati, were discussed.
The meeting aimed to identify short-term and long-term solutions to combat the increasing number of accidents in these areas.
During the meeting, Commissioner Jha provided directives to various departments such as the Public Works Department and the National Highways Authority of India (NHRA) regarding the immediate implementation of road safety measures in accident-prone areas.
The directives included the installation of proper road signs, road safety reflectors, and the clearance of roadside forests. Additionally, the Commissioner urged the removal of accumulated sand and mud on the roads. The District Commissioner further emphasised the need for expediting the implementation of road safety measures, such as addressing road defects, conducting road repairs, and constructing footbridges and completing the roads under construction.
The Public Works Department was specifically instructed to install speed breakers on local roads leading to national highways. The meeting was attended by several teams comprising Additional Commissioners, Chakra Officers, and Assistant Commissioners from the district administration, highlighting the significance of the issue.
In terms of enforcement, the Transport Department was directed to intensify efforts to crack down on vehicles violating traffic laws, with a particular emphasis on bike riders not wearing helmets. Additionally, the Excise Department was instructed to take strong action against dhabas engaging in the illegal sale of liquor.
Notable attendees at the meeting included Additional Commissioner Bikram Chetri, Assistant Commissioner of Transport, and Additional Acting Kamrup Metropolitan District Transport Officer (Registration and Licensing) Gautam Das, as well as senior officers from the Highway Authority and other relevant departments.
