The COVID-19 pandemic has left no sector untouched and Media has been no exception. Not just the regional media houses, but the pandemic has even brought national media giants to its knees and reports of numerous shutdowns and layoffs have been rife.
Drastic reduction in advertisement revenues and declining circulation figures of newspapers and magazines have forced media houses to take unprecedented steps. While some media houses have stopped printing altogether, others have reduced their pages. Salary cuts and job losses have also been reported from across the industry.
As per a report by The Print, The Times Group announced salary cuts in an internal email to the employees of its print publication The Times of India, The Economic Times, and Navbharat Times. It mentioned that there will be a salary reduction between 5 to 10 percent from 1 April.
Even television has not been spared as one national news channel too announced salary cuts between 10 - 40 percent, applicable for employees earning more than Rs 50,000 per month.
Likewise, media houses in Assam too have seen similarly affected. Some of the major publications took down their senior reporters and journalists overnight and online publications have also been seen taking similar steps. The Telegraph's Guwahati edition was also shut with the newspaper asking all its reporters from the region, except one, to submit their resignations by May 31.
However, while the rest of the media houses are either shutting down or cutting down the number of its employees G Plus has been very active in adding new personnel to their team.
