Are private universities doing enough to deliver right results?

The quality of higher education in Assam in general and Guwahati in particular has been a cause of concern for the parents as well as students across the state. This leads the students to leave the state in search of better institutions that could provide them with better employment opportunities.

Last year, G Plus had conducted a survey, the results of which showed, a little more than half of the students left the city to pursue higher education. This was revealed in a survey called ‘Let’s Talk Guwahati’, conducted by G Plus. Around 10,000 people from different localities of the city participated in this month-long survey.

A total of 53.6% respondents said that someone from their family is currently pursuing higher education from outside Guwahati. Further, 18.1% of the students studying outside Guwahati have left the city after passing class 10. This was followed by students who left their homes after completing class 12 (10.8%). Additionally, 4.9% graduates have moved outside Guwahati in search of better educational opportunities.

At a time when a majority of students are leaving the state in search of better opportunities, a few higher educational institutions in the city are creating a niche in the state which apart from improving the quality of higher education in the state, are also helping to retain the talent within the state.

One among these is Royal Global University (RGU), a leading educational hub in the north eastern region which offers a wide variety of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.  RGU has been accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and boasts of well-qualified faculty and improved facilities.

Upasana Choudhury, a fourth semester student of M.Sc Physics said, “I feel happy to have chosen Royal Global University for my higher education. The happiness was doubled when I got ample opportunities to discover my talents and skills by engaging in a lot of academic and non-academic activities of my interest.”

It has helped me to fulfil my dream of standing on my own feet with a respectable job which I succeeded to get through the support of Royal Centre of Corporate Relations, the placement cell at Royal Global University.”

In this competitive arena, where higher education is being sold at sky-rocketing prize, RGU has endeavoured on a noble mission of imparting the best educational facilities at a very moderate fee structure.”

According to RGU staff, various prominent companies visit the university every year to provide employment to the students. Royal Centre of Corporate Relations (Placement cell) offers placement to the RGU students through various activities throughout the academic session.

The key takeaway here is that universities like RGU is keen on developing human capital for which the centre holds regular sessions on technical training, grooming sessions for personality development, mock group discussions (GD), personal interviews (PI) and online test practices. Additionally, personnel from the centre visit potential employers in industrial and corporate sectors.

Some of the prominent companies which have recruited students from RGU are - Amul, Infosys, Cognizant, Bosch, Airtel, flipkart, ICICI Bank,Fedral Bank, Indusind Bank, Axis Bank, HCL, Reliance and Wipro, among others.
