Recent instances throughout the city have shown open disregard and ignorance towards traffic rules. People park in no-parking zones throughout the various areas, giving rise to jams and irregular traffic.
Riding and driving on the wrong side of the road is also very common among commuters. Such violations and behaviour often result in accidents leading to serious injuries and at times deaths.
Talking to GPlus, Lahon Kakati, a resident of Nabin Nagar said, “People today do not care about the rules and regulations. They just want to reach first. Whenever it is. But such behaviour causes problems. Who will make them understand?”
Another local of Ulubari said, “People park bikes and cars lawlessly anytime near my shop. Even if we tell them, they seldom care. People have no empathy and awareness these days, which needs to be resolved.”
Such violations continue even through the presence of traffic police authorities and laws.
Speaking to GPlus, a traffic police official said, “We as police fine these offenders whenever we can. People just do not seem to care. Laws and fines are imposed but do not seem to deter the people from such actions. They only care if something serious occurs, until which it is all well and good it seems!”
“I believe more emphasis needs to be put on the awareness among the commuters along with following and imposition of the traffic laws,” he added.
Even with proper traffic laws in place, violations among people in Guwahati are dime-a-dozen and it needs to be seen as to how we as responsible citizens tackle it.
