Anti-CAA Demonstrations Gain Momentum In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: The Coordination Committee against CAA, Assam, reignited the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at Guwahati's Dighalipukhuri on Saturday. The demonstration garnered support from various political leaders and senior citizens who came together to voice their opposition to the contentious legislation.

Recalling the intensity of past protests, especially the massive agitation by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) in 2019, the event served as a reminder of the voices that have persistently opposed the CAA. Tragically, five youths lost their lives during the 2019 protests in Guwahati.

Hiren Gohain, a prominent intellectual and a leading figure in the anti-CAA movement, emphasised the significance of this protest as the first leg of a series of prolonged demonstrations.

Gohain, the President of the Coordination Committee against CAA, Assam, declared their intention to make CAA a major issue in the upcoming Lok Sabha election.

Addressing the media, Gohain highlighted the movement's purpose "Our movement is to awaken the people to protect the interests of the Assamese community and Assamese language. That's why we are protesting here, and we will continue to protest."
