GUWAHATI: In a significant development, Amrit Dutta, a prominent figure in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) movement, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday.
Alongside Amrit Dutta, several other local leaders, including Congress leader Ashok Sharma, state executive of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) Anupam Dutta, and Tai ethnic group leader Hemanta Burhagohain, also joined the BJP during a gathering in Digboi.
Amrit Dutta, a former leader of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU), played a pivotal role in the protests against the controversial CAA. In December 2019, he was even arrested by Tinsukia police and spent a month in jail for his active participation in the anti-CAA demonstrations, as reported by various media outlets.
Moreover the Congress leader, Ashok Sharma, state executive of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Anupam Dutta, a leader of the Tai ethnic group, Hemanta Burhagohain, also joined the BJP during an event, as per reports.
Apart from them, 300 others have also joined the saffron party, media reports stated.
