Recently, several social media users shared AI-generated images of fake Aadhaar and PAN cards, prompting widespread attention. One user, Yaswanth Sai Palaghat, posted on X, stating, “ChatGPT is generating fake Aadhaar and PAN cards instantly, which is a serious security risk. This is why AI should be regulated to a certain extent.”
Another user, who goes by the name Piku, posted a similar concern. He stated that by simply providing a name, date of birth, and address, the AI was able to create a “near-perfect replica” of an Aadhaar card. “We keep talking about data privacy, but who’s selling these Aadhaar and Pancard datasets to AI companies?” He asked.
Although the documents generated do not use real personal data, users have shown that the AI is capable of producing fake IDs using names of public figures, further highlighting the ease with which such tools could be misused.
However, another post claimed that the AI could even replicate an Aadhaar card with an individual’s image, prompting further concern over whether facial data might have been used to train the model.
Since its launch, ChatGPT has demonstrated significant advances in text and image generation. However, now that users are able to generate near-authentic replicas of government-issued identification documents using the AI’s image creation capabilities, what will be the future implications of this ability?
