GUWAHATI: In the backdrop of the increasing protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, the Assam Gana Parishad has decided to walk out of the alliance in Assam with the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) over the Bill.
The AGP had earlier too, threatened to end the alliance with BJP as the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 contradicts the Assam Accord.
The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 seeks to amend the Citizenship Act 1955 by making Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan to become eligible for Indian citizenship.
