GUWAHATI: As the COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the region, two Northeastern states, Manipur and Mizoram have announced a complete lockdown to curb the further spread of the virus.

The Mizoram government has imposed a 7-day total lockdown in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) area, as a majority of new cases have been reported from there. The order issued on Friday, July 17, said that the total lockdown in the AMC area will come into force from July 18 till July 24 midnight.

Essential services like water and electricity supply, medical service, hospital, dispensaries, pharmacies, vaccination, LPG distribution, filing stations, among others, will function normally and all commercial vehicles will cease to operate during the complete lockdown.

The movement of people, including the casual visits of neighbors or relatives residing in the same building complex, is strictly prohibited during the full lockdown, the order said. Similar lockdown or other stringent restrictions might be imposed in other parts of the State by the Deputy Commissioners, depending on the COVID-19 situation, the order further said.

Similarly, the Manipur government has also decided to impose a strict 10-day lockdown in the state from July 18.

Manipur Chief Minister (CM) N Biren Singh took to Twitter to share the news. "In view of the Covid situation in the State, there’ll be a strict curfew from 18-28 July. All institutions, except the essential services, will remain closed. Further, only the people coming out for vaccination & testing will be permitted to venture out." he tweeted.

In addition, services related to water and power supply, telecom and internet, air travel, and agricultural activities will function as usual, the Manipur CM further informed.
