GUWAHATI: After Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat there is a lurking possibility that the Congress party may break up in Assam.
Many Congress legislators are not happy with the functioning of state and central party leadership.
The situation has come to such a pass that Assam Pradesh Congress Committee General Secretary Debabrata Saikia is not happy with the state of affairs.
According to sources, Saikia is contemplating resigning from the post after the budget session, as he is under tremendous pressure of many Congress legislators in the state.
According to him both state and central leadership have failed to infuse confidence to the grassroots workers of the party.
In such a kind of scenario it is better to absolve himself from the post and remain as normal party worker.
The flashpoint in this whole episode started with Congress leadership in the state joining hands with AIUDF for supporting a joint candidate Ajit Kumar Bhuyan for the Rajya Sabha elections and many legislators in upper Assam feel it could spell doomsday for the party in the assembly election of 2021.
“Tarun Gogoi’s photo with Badruddin Ajmal has given a very wrong signal to Hindu voters. Many of us whose prime vote bank rests with Hindus and indigenous people are in danger of being washed away,” a legislator who did not wished to be named told G Plus.
As hinted by BJP’s chief strategist Himanta Biswa Sarma a group of legislators numbering around 12 are in touch with BJP to search for an alternative political career.
Former Congress in charge of Assam Harish Rawat said that there has been no decision taken by the party to partner with AIUDF in 2021.
The Congress has a total of 23 legislators in the Assam legislative assembly. AIUDF has 14 legislators.
The political equation in Assam appears to be heading for an interesting twist a year ahead of the all important assembly polls.
And counter narrative to BJP weaving around anti- CAA protests appears to be on a divided line. How it will impact the political arithmetic only time will tell.
