African Swine Fever Detected in Pigs of Assam

GUWAHATI: Amid the lockdown, a new fever has surfaced in the piggeries of Assam - the African Swine Fever (ASF).

Reportedly, samples from the two states - Assam and Arunachal Pradesh - sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal have tested positive for ASF virus.

Earlier, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department announced a ban on the sale of pigs and pork meat in several districts of Assam.

The order was issued in Dhemaji, North Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar and Jorhat districts.

African swine fever virus is a large, double-stranded DNA virus in the Asfarviridae family. It is the causative agent of African swine fever. The virus causes a hemorrhagic fever with high mortality rates in domestic pigs.
