GUWAHATI: Acclaimed director Tushar Tyagi’s short film Saving Chintu, starring Assamese actor Adil Hussain, is set to premiere on Open Theatre, on September 27.

The film, which has qualified for Oscar consideration, explores the journey of an American-Indian gay couple attempting to adopt an HIV-positive child from an Indian orphanage.

Tyagi emphasises that the film focuses more on the couple’s love for the child rather than their sexuality. "It’s about two humans who love a child and want to adopt him," he said, aiming to break away from common queer film tropes.

Adil Hussain, best known for Star Trek: Discovery, not only stars in the film but also serves as a producer alongside Ritika Jayaswal. He was drawn to the project after reading the script in 2019, while filming with Marvel Studios in Atlanta.

The film's ensemble cast includes Sachin Bhatt, Edward Sonnenblick, and Dipannita Sharma.
