GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has warned Prime Minister, Narendra Modi that there will be an intense fight from their side against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. This news came after the Lok Sabha passed the Bill on January 8, after voting was conducted.

Samujjal Bhattacharya, Chief Adviser of the AASU said that the Prime Minister's act of passing the bill is “all part of his vote bank policy.” The bill was forcefully passed and is condemned by the AASU and they will be fighting this bill until the very end.

Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister tabled this Bill on Tuesday in the Lok Sabha amidst major protests across the state and in the state capital, New Delhi. He said that this bill is not only for Assam, or for migrants from a particular country. The state has been dealing with illegal migration for a long time and Assam’s burden will be India’s burden.

After the passing of the bill, Bhattacharya addressed the media and said that he was grateful to all the leaders who took a stand and spoke on behalf of every Assamese person in the Lok Sabha.

Before the passing of the bill, AASU had enforced a statewide Assam Bandh to protest against the passing of this bill on January 8.
