AAP State Leadership Denounces Assam Government's Alleged Misuse Of Police Power

GUWAHATI: The state leadership of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) voiced their opposition on March 28 to the sudden deployment of police officers at the party's state office.

This action came in the wake of the issuance of the general elections notification in the country and the subsequent arrest of AAP's national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on alleged charges by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), followed by a similar arrest in Assam.

Anurupa Dekarja and Gurpreet Singh Uppal, the party's state spokespersons, strongly criticised the government for what they perceived as the misuse of police power against AAP.

A significant contingent of Assam Police remained stationed at the party's state office for nearly four hours, from 10 AM to 2 . It is noteworthy that AAP has fielded candidates in two Lok Sabha seats in Assam. Rishiraj Kaundinya and Manoj Dhanowar, the AAP candidates from Sonitpur and Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seats respectively, filed their nominations on Wednesday. Over 10,000 party workers and supporters participated in the nomination march of the two candidates in Tezpur and Dibrugarh.

Party spokesperson Gurpreet Singh Uppal alleged that the Assam government's actions were aimed at intimidating AAP leaders and supporters, evident from the deployment of police officers less than 24 hours before the nomination filing. Describing the government's actions as autocratic, the AAP leadership in Assam criticised the perceived attempts to suppress the opposition party in a democratic country.
