The event, a major part of life for the fishermen, is held every year on the first Sunday of January.

The two-day fishing activity ended on January 6, drawing about 825 families from villages around Azara.

Talking to GPlus, Pramod Kalita, General Secretary of Deepor Beel Suraksha Mancha, informed that many families in the region depend on this wetland for their livelihood, catching and selling fish to sustain themselves.

"In each boat, two people stay to fish throughout the day, ensuring a steady catch as part of the community effort", Kalita told GPlus.
