This crackdown is the latest development to part of the state’s ongoing efforts to curb narcotics-related activities.

“Peddlers in the Char area of Ghulani Tapu thought they could outsmart the administration and cultivate poppy,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the operation. “Well, they forgot our Govt and @assampolice are always ahead in the game! Plan foiled.”

The Assam Police’s official account also shared a humorous take on the operation. “A postcard-worthy view… if only it weren’t illegal!” the account stated.

In recent years, the administration has intensified operations against drug trafficking, poppy cultivation, and other illicit activities. Several large-scale poppy destruction drives have been carried out across Assam, particularly in border areas known for such illegal cultivation.

Officials have warned that stringent action will continue against those involved in such illegal drug-related activities.
