“The rise in depression and mental health issues in society is a cause for concern,” Singhal posted on X. “There is need for collective discussions and appropriate measures to address this growing challenge.”

BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia had raised the issue in the assembly, highlighting the increasing number of suicide cases in different districts. He noted that pressure from families to excel in academics, along with stress related to family and relationships, has led to frequent incidents of suicide in the state.

Saikia additionally urged the government to take preventive measures and suggested the appointment of psychological counsellors in every high school to help students cope with mental health challenges.

In response, Singhal acknowledged that depression and suicidal tendencies are on the rise in society. He revealed that 35% of suicide cases in Assam are due to family-related problems, 12% are linked to marriage issues, and 10% are associated with love affairs. "As per data, 57% of suicides in the state are because of family, marriage, or love affairs-related issues," he stated.

Additionally, the minister noted that 8% of suicides are linked to property disputes, while 1% are due to academic failure.

To address the issue, Singhal urged young people to seek help through the 24x7 Tele MANAS helpline, which provides tele-counselling services for mental health support. "Eighty per cent of mental health issues can be resolved through counselling," he stated.

The health minister also assured that in the coming days, steps will be taken to strengthen mental health support systems. The health department will collaborate with the education department to introduce counselling services in educational institutions, ensuring better access to mental health care for students.
