Union Home Minister Amit Shah made the announcement on social media platform X, stating, “In pursuit of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji's vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny.”
“The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh,” Shah added.
Currently, Ladakh has two districts, Leh and Kargil. The addition of these 5 districts will increase the total number to seven, thereby expanding the reach of welfare schemes and services to a larger population.
The Ministry of Home Affairs has granted “in-principle approval” for the formation of these new districts and has directed the Ladakh administration to form a committee. This committee will assess various aspects such as district headquarters, boundaries, administrative structure, and staffing requirements. The report is expected within three months, after which the final proposal for the new districts will be submitted to the Home Ministry for further action.
