4-Year Bachelor Degree Graduates Can Now Directly Take NET, Pursue PhD

GUWAHATI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced a policy change that allows students with four-year undergraduate degrees to directly appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET). This decision, disclosed by UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar, signals a shift in the eligibility criteria for advanced studies, including the pursuit of a PhD.

The UGC's new policy also permits students with four-year undergraduate degrees to pursue a PhD in any subject, regardless of the discipline of their bachelor's course. This opens up more academic avenues for students, particularly those who meet the additional requirement of having at least 75% aggregate marks or equivalent grades in their undergraduate programme.

"The candidates with four-year undergraduate degrees can now directly pursue PhD and appear for NET. Such candidates are allowed to appear in a subject in which they want to pursue a PhD irrespective of the discipline in which they have obtained the four-year bachelor's degree," Kumar told media.

A relaxation of five percent in the required marks or equivalent grades is provided for candidates from reserved categories, including Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC, non-creamy layer), differently-abled, and economically weaker sections.
