27 Dead In Mizoram Landslides As Cyclone Remal Unleashes Its Fury

 

GUWAHATI: Cyclone Remal hit Mizoram the hardest in the Northeast leaving 27 dead and at least 10 missing in multiple landslides. The single largest landslide, which led to collapse of a stone quarry at Melthum on Aizawl’s outskirts, claimed 14 while at least eight were reported missing.

Four more died in Hilmen while two were missing. Landslides claimed the remaining nine lives in Salem, Falkawn, Lungsei, Kelsih and Aibawk. The quarry collapsed at 6 am on Tuesday, May 28.

Search and rescue operation is still underway. Additionally, the collapse caused severe damage to several nearby houses.

Electricity and water supply will be stifled due to damage of infrastructure. Mizoram Chief Minister has announced  ₹15 crore for State Disaster Relief Fund while ₹4 lakh  each was announced as ex-gratia to the kin of deceased.


The Lengpui Airport also suffered a massive landslide, resulting in its blockade. Furthermore, multiple community cemeteries collapsed, affecting over 20 graveyards.

The impact of the cyclone also extended to the Tlawng River, which swelled significantly at Sairang locality, causing damage to nearby houses. Additionally, the heavy water flow led to the unfortunate incident of pigs being swept away at Tlangnuam locality.

Cyclone Remal made landfall along the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal on the night of May 26, unleashing heavy rain and powerful gusts before advancing towards the northeastern parts of the country.
