15,000 Bangladeshis Received Indian Citizenship in Last Five Years, Home Ministry Informs

GUWAHATI: India granted citizenship to 15,000 Bangladeshis in the last five years, said by the Ministry of Home Affairs in Parliament on Sunday, September 20.


According to the Home Ministry, as reported by the Assam government, a total of 83,008 cases are pending in Foreigners' Tribunals in Assam regarding people who were declared to be "doubtful voters".


The ministry further informed that 86,756 people were declared as foreigners in the last five years.


Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai informed that details of the number of detention centers are not centrally maintained. These are set up by the state governments and union territory administrations along with the number of foreign national detained.
