GUWAHATI: Two 14-year-old girls from Singimari village in Hajo, Kamrup Rural, were reported missing on May 3 after they failed to return home from school. An investigation by the Assam Centre for Rural Development (ACRD) has confirmed that the girls were trafficked to Bihar.

Based on leads from the field, ACRD — a partner of the Just Rights for Children (JRC) initiative — coordinated with Bihar Police. One of the girls was successfully rescued from Begusarai district in Bihar on May 6. She is currently under the protection of child welfare authorities. Efforts are underway to provide her with counselling and rehabilitation support.

The second girl remains untraceable. Search operations involving police from both Assam and Bihar are ongoing.

Talking to GPlus, Prerna Changkakati, ACRD Executive Director said, "This case is a tragic reminder of how vulnerable our children remain to trafficking networks. While we are relieved that one girl has been rescued, our efforts will not stop until the second child is safely located. We urge families, schools, and communities to stay alert and work together to prevent such incidents. Child protection must be a collective responsibility,”

An FIR has been registered, and authorities are pursuing leads to trace the trafficker and locate the missing child.
