1,229 Individuals Evacuated By Assam Rifles To Safety During Manipur Crisis 

 

GUWAHATI: Following the evacuation conducted earlier on May 7, Assam Rifles launched the second phase of Operation Kohima Calling to further evacuate people from Nagaland stuck in Manipur due to the ongoing conflict, bringing the total tally of rescued individuals to 1,229 as of yet.

The evacuated individuals have been brought back in 13 buses of the Nagaland State Transport, and four police buses as part of ’Operation Kohima Calling’. 

The buses were escorted by Assam Rifles jawans, two platoons of Nagaland Armed Police, and personnel of the India Reserve Battalion. Brigadier Ved Beniwal, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (North) Sheta Lohe, and Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) Weku Zhiemi oversaw the entire rescue operation of “Operation Kohima Calling’.

Manipur saw many people from Nagaland stranded amidst the ongoing tense situation in the state. Prioritizing the safety of these people, Assam Rifles under the aegis of Spear Corps undertook 'Operation Kohima Calling' in two phases. 

In the first phase, 676 individuals were rescued and during the second phase, 553 individuals were evacuated including 47 Konyak Girls from Yoripok. 

The rescue team went to the interiors of Thoubal District for the release of these girls who were all reportedly working on hourly wages in a Veneer factory.

As per media reports, the operation will continue to bring back those stranded in the interior areas of Manipur amidst the ongoing situation.
