World Mental Health Day observed in city

The Department of Psychology, Cotton University in collaboration with the North East Indian Association of Applied Psychology, on Tuesday organised a daylong programme in the Sudmersen Hall of the university on the occasion of World Mental Health Day on the theme ‘Mental Health in the Workplace’. The seminar started with lighting of the ceremonial lamp by guest of honour and noted psychiatrist Dr Sangeeta Datta.

 

The Registrar and the Academic Registrar of the University Prof Shikhar Sarma and Dr Nripen Deka respectively who were also present at the event, highlighted the importance of mental health and its related issues, in their speeches.

 

The Head of the Department of Psychology as well as president of the North East Indian Association of Applied Psychology Dr Dimpy Mahanta discussed the importance of mental health at the workplace and combating various mental health issues to lead a healthy and productive life.

 

The large number of students who poured in from various fields of study were enlightened with tips to be resilient to daily hassles.

 

Guest of honour Dr Datta gave a brief but rich presentation on the year’s theme. This was followed by a discussion on various measures and interventions to psychological issues used nowadays by clinical and counselling professionals.

 

Related topics like workplace stress, decreased productivity, human resource upgradation and other possible risks of mental illness at workplace were also addressed.

 

A caption writing competition and an oral presentation competition were also held on the occasion. The event concluded with a rally and street play from the University main gate to Dighalipukhuri and back with the slogan, ‘Respect to workers welcome sound minds’.
