GUWAHATI: At a time when the state witnessed a widespread protest against the brutal killing of two Guwahati boys in Karbi Anglong, there are reports of brutal killing of a woman in Umrangso in Dima Hasao district mistaking her to be child lifter.
The story came to the light after the recovery of the body of a woman near Panimur waterfall under Diyungmukh police station on Tuesday.
The 45-year-old mentally retarded woman, Om Kumari Sharma is the wife of Bhisma Sharma and a resident of New Tumbung under Umrangso police station.
According to the report, the woman went to Panimur Stone Quary on June 8 and was staying at the veranda of a shop. Later, two persons identifying themselves as VDP (Village Defence Party) personnel came to the shop and forcibly took the woman with them mistaking her to be a child lifter.
However, on June 9, on the basis of hearsay, the representatives of Gorkha Sanmelan informed the police that a woman was killed by miscreants mistaking her to be child lifter. The police started search operations and finally recovered the body on Tuesday.
The body bore several injury marks. The police have the reasons to believe that the woman was gang-raped before being killed. As many as seven persons have been picked up for interrogation in this connection.
It was also learned by the member of Gorkha Sanmelan that the two persons claiming to be VDP had warned the locals of nearby areas not to inform the police about the incident or else face dire consequences.
