GUWAHATI: All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) President Utpal Sarma recently expressed concern over what he described as the diminishing cultural essence in contemporary Assamese society, particularly in traditional wedding ceremonies.
During his Bihu address at Judges’ Field in Guwahati, Sarma pointed to the increasing incorporation of Bollywood music in events that were once rooted in Assamese traditions. Referring to the popular Hindi song “Banno Re Banno” being played during bidaai ceremonies, he remarked that such trends signified a gradual shift away from cultural authenticity.
Sarma further highlighted how Assamese culinary traditions were also being sidelined in favour of non-indigenous dishes. He noted that traditional wedding feasts, once known for showcasing local recipes, are now being replaced by items such as pav bhaji and French fries. This, he said, reflects an emerging pattern of cultural dilution.
