Wankhede Stadium To Have Stands Named After Rohit Sharma, Ajit Wadekar, Sharad Pawar

GUWAHATI: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has approved a proposal to name one of the stands at Wankhede Stadium after India captain Rohit Sharma. The decision was made during the Association's Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Tuesday, April 15.

Additionally, two other stands will be named in honour of former BCCI president Sharad Pawar and batting great Ajit Wadekar, the MCA confirmed. Divecha Pavilion Level 3 will be called the Rohit Sharma Stand, while the Grand Stand Level 3 will be named after Pawar and Grand Stand Level 4 after Wadekar.

"Today's decisions reflect our deep respect for the pillars of Mumbai cricket and our determination to build an even stronger future," MCA president Ajinkya Naik said, according to reports.

The Wankhede Stadium has stands named after other legends, including  Sachin Tendulkar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sunil Gavaskar and Vijay Merchant. Rohit led India to the T20 World Cup win in 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy title in March this year. He has played a total of 46 first-class games, 17 one-dayers and 25 T20s for Mumbai.

Rohit has also enjoyed tremendous success as captain of the Mumbai Indians, guiding the franchise to a record five IPL titles. Chants of "Mumbai cha Raja" often echo through the Wankhede stands whenever Rohit takes the field, dominating opposition bowlers.

Wadekar, who played 37 Tests and two ODIs from 1966 to 1974, led India to historic series wins in the West Indies and England in 1971. He made his first-class debut in 1958-59. He was one of the best No. 3 batters in the history of Indian cricket and one of the finest slip fielders. He died in August 2018 at the age of 77.
