The ship is now wedged into debris from the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which is 3km (1.6 miles) long and part of a major highway

The footage of the bridge collapsing was captured the instant when the bridge's steel arches collapsed and fell into the Patapsco River reportedly at around 1:30 AM. Based on videos posted on X, it seems that the vessel collided with one of the supports of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

The precise number of vehicles on the 1.6-mile-long bridge at the time of the accident is still unknown.

Maryland officials said that rescue workers were searching for road repair crews who had been working on the Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday and were plunged into the bay’s cold waters, reports stated.

A huge search operation is underway for multiple missing people, reports say, while two people have been pulled from the water. Some construction workers were on the bridge at the time it collapsed, as per reports.

Sonar has detected multiple vehicles underwater, where the temperature is around 8C (47F). There is no indication the crash was intentional but it is too early to determine what caused it.

The port of Baltimore near the bridge is the largest in the US for specialised cargo.
