Known to circulate globally since the 1970s, HMPV typically causes mild cold-like symptoms such as cough, nasal congestion, sore throat, and fever. However, in severe cases, it can lead to wheezing, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, pneumonia, or exacerbation of pre-existing conditions like asthma.
Infants under one year of age, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to severe illness caused by the virus. It is most active between November and May, contributing to 4–16% of acute respiratory infections worldwide.
Notably, in Bengaluru, two infants were diagnosed with HMPV at Baptist Hospital. An eight-month-old boy was admitted with bronchopneumonia and tested positive for the virus on January 3. A three-month-old girl, also treated for bronchopneumonia, tested positive on January 6. Both children have since been discharged and are reportedly recovering well.
Meanwhile, Karnataka’s Department of Health and Family Welfare Services has issued an advisory regarding the presence of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in the state.

The public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection. This includes covering the mouth and nose with a tissue or handkerchief while coughing or sneezing, washing hands regularly with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers, and ensuring good ventilation in indoor spaces. Individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms are encouraged to seek medical advice.
Authorities also recommend maintaining a healthy diet and staying hydrated to support the immune system during this time.
