GUWAHATI: In a recent operation, the Guwahati Forest Range and Wildlife Crime Control Bureau conducted a search at the Bidyanagar area in Guwahati at 4 PM on September 21, following specific intelligence regarding the illicit trade of scheduled species of fish.
Two individuals, identified as Md. Sahidul Islam and Md. Habibullah Haque, both hailing from Darrang District, were apprehended from a rented house in Bidyanagar. The search operation resulted in the discovery of 46 Pipli Seng or Cheng Garaka (Barca snakehead or Channa barca) fishes in their possession.
The Pipli Seng Fish, found in the Brahmaputra, is a highly endangered fish and has been classified as a Schedule I species under the latest Amendment of the Wild Life (Protection) Act 1972 last year. This legal categorisation aims to protect and conserve the species due to its vulnerable status in the wild.
Further details are awaited.
