According to the official government order, Pandey, an IAS officer from the 1987 Odisha cadre, will assume charge of SEBI from the date of his appointment or until further notice, whichever comes first. He will succeed Madhabi Puri Buch, whose term as SEBI’s first female chairperson concludes on March 1. Buch took office on March 2, 2022, following the tenure of Ajay Tyagi (2017–2022) and UK Sinha (2011–2017).

Before his role as Finance Secretary, Pandey served as Secretary in the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) and the Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM), both under the Ministry of Finance. Additionally, he held key positions in the Department of Personnel and Training.

Appointed as India’s Finance Secretary in September 2024, Pandey later took charge as Secretary of the Department of Revenue in January 2025. Throughout his tenure, he played a crucial role in shaping India’s fiscal policies, advising the finance minister on key economic matters, and representing the ministry before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament.

Pandey holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and an MBA from the UK. He has held several senior administrative roles at both the state and central government levels.
