GUWAHATI: Assam boxer Lovlina Borgohain has won the quarterfinals after defeating Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) 4-1 in the Women’s welterweight (64-69kg) on Friday, July 30. With this, the boxer has assured India of a second medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
This will be Assam’s first Olympic medal ever.
The Taiwanese boxer is a former World Boxing Champion and ranks ahead of Borgohain in the 69 kg category world rankings. Chen Nien-chin has faced Lovlina thrice earlier and has won on all three occasions.
Lovlina beat Germany's Nadine Apetz in the previous match 3-2 and reserved her place in the quarter-finals on July 27. Borgohain is the first woman boxer from Assam to qualify for the Olympics, and now is up for the semi-finals at Tokyo.
