GUWAHATI: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under the Ministry of Communications, has issued an advisory warning against fake calls targeting unsuspecting individuals.
The advisory specifically cautions citizens about the alarming trend of receiving fake calls where callers threaten to disconnect their mobile numbers or falsely claim their numbers are being misused for illegal activities. Such deceptive tactics are often employed by cyber criminals to manipulate victims and steal personal information for cyber-crime or financial frauds.

Furthermore, the DoT has highlighted another concerning issue involving WhatsApp calls originating from foreign mobile numbers, particularly those with country codes like +92, which impersonate government officials to deceive and defraud people.
In response to these emerging threats, the DoT emphasises that neither itself nor the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) authorises anyone to make such calls on their behalf. To combat these fraudulent communications effectively, the DoT urges citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activity through the 'Chakshu – Report Suspected Fraud Communications' facility available on the Sanchar Saathi portal (www.sancharsaathi.gov.in/sfc).
