‘Tis The Season To Be Jolly

It is heartwarming to witness the people of Guwahati embracing every religion and culture in their unique way. Christmas, a global festival of grandeur, has made its mark in the Indian market, bringing along a burst of excitement and splendour.

Gone are the days when people were confined to their own traditions. In today's world of abundant exposure, it's beautiful to see the people of Guwahati welcoming and embracing Christmas with the same enthusiasm as they do with Bihu, Durga Puja, Holi, Diwali, or Eid.

Despite Christians making up only about 2% of India's population, the celebration of Christmas has become very widespread. While it may not match Diwali or Holi in terms of scale, the infectious enthusiasm among Christmas celebrants is indeed noteworthy. Children eagerly write letters to Santa Claus, stockings are hung with care, and carols fill the air throughout the day.

The first inkling of Christmas as a significant celebration reached many of us through Doordarshan. Short news clips showcasing midnight masses and global festivities left a lasting impression during a time when visual exposure was limited. Those clips affirmed what many learned in Indian school textbooks about Lord Jesus and His message, but more importantly, they portrayed Christmas as a joyful and cosmopolitan celebration. While some may argue that  it appeared somewhat superficial, leaning towards an admiration for Western elements, it undeniably captured the essence of a festive season that embodies joy and inclusivity.

The popularity of Christmas in Guwahati and across the country can also be attributed to the influence of Western culture, evident in movies, cartoons, music, and lifestyle. In metro cities like Kolkata or Bengaluru, Christmas fervour kicks in as early as the first week of December, with streets adorned with carol singers and an overall festive ambience that takes the celebration to greater heights.

Christmas, devoid of strict religious aspects, has found a place in the hearts of people as a celebration promising harmless fun and a reflection of modernity.

The visual spectacle of Guwahati adorned in festive decorations during Christmas is truly nothing short of enchanting. Streets illuminated with twinkling lights and vibrant Christmas trees standing tall in public spaces turn the entire city into a winter wonderland. Malls and shopping centres undergo a magical transformation, captivating the imagination of both residents and visitors alike.

Beyond the glitz and glamour, Christmas in Guwahati fosters a strong sense of community. Residents unite to organize events and celebrations, turning the festival into a time for bonding and bonhomie. From joyful carol singing to community feasts and charity events, the spirit of goodwill and generosity permeates the festive season.

In the pluralistic tapestry of India, festivals should not be confined to boxes. Everyone has the freedom to celebrate any occasion which finds resonance in them. Let’s cherish and celebrate this diversity and keep the festive spirit alive in the heart of our pluralistic nation.
