Surge In Brass Utensil Prices Hits Guwahati’s Market Hard

GUWAHATI: Markets in Guwahati have seen a notable rise in the price of brass and copper utensils, with vendors observing a significant dip in sales this year. Traditionally popular for household purchases, these items now come with a heftier price tag, making them less accessible to buyers.

Vendors confirm that the increase in price is affecting both customer footfall and their ability to sell.

Speaking to GPlus, a vendor at Fancy Bazar said, “Sales are mediocre this year. Prices for brass items have risen significantly compared to last year. A piece that sold for ₹120 is now priced between ₹150 and ₹160.”

Another vendor shared, “This year’s sales have been average. The price increase in brass items is more than expected. Small brass plates start at ₹75, while small pots are now around ₹420.” Daytime market activity has slowed, with a little spike in shoppers during evening hours.

One customer noted, “Diwali shopping is difficult this year, as prices have risen across the board, especially for brass items. This increase has affected us financially.”

The interest in brass, silver, and gold is often tied to local beliefs that these metals bring prosperity and ward off negativity. While jewellery traditionally serves this purpose, brass and copper utensils are thought to offer similar benefits.

With rising prices, however, this year's custom might be difficult for many households, and vendors hope for an eventual surge in sales as the season continues.
