GUWAHATI: With Durga Puja just around the corner, Kamrup Metro’s District Commissioner, Sumit Sattawan, had some choice words of wisdom for the city’s Puja Committees. During a meeting on Thursday, he tackled everything from social media savvy to ensuring the festival remains free of, well, spirited indulgence.

In a nod to modern times, Sattawan lauded the use of social media to enhance the Puja experience for all, especially the elderly. “I appreciate the fact that social media, in the form of videos or live streams, is being used to showcase different venues across the city. This will also help those who cannot physically join the celebrations to enjoy the festivities from the comfort of their homes.

Plus, for those who can head out, it’s a great way to check the crowd situation. Some might even decide staying in is the smarter move,” he quipped, adding a touch of practicality to the Puja planning.

While on the subject of responsibility, Sattawan threw in a firm suggestion for the committees: keep the celebration intoxicant-free. “If any of these activities are going on, there should be a designated member who stays sober to manage any potential issues. Someone has to hold the fort, or rather, the pandal,” he remarked dryly. “This will help keep the environment pure, and the sanctity of the Puja intact,” he added, ensuring that a gentle reminder of tradition was woven into the festivities.

With social media poised to be the unofficial crowd monitor and a few sober minds in charge, this year’s Durga Puja promises a mix of modern convenience and old-fashioned responsibility—just the right blend for a smooth celebration.
