RG Kar Rape & Murder Case Victim’s Advocate Vrinda Grover Steps Down, Cites ‘Reasons’

GUWAHATI: Senior advocate Vrinda Grover has officially withdrawn from representing the family of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder victim in the Supreme Court, Calcutta High Court, and Sealdah trial court as per reports on December 11. Grover attributed her decision to "certain intervening factors and circumstances."

Reports disclosed that the withdrawal stemmed from differences of opinion between Grover’s legal team and the victim’s family regarding the case’s management. Despite significant progress, including evidence recorded from 43 prosecution witnesses and successful opposition to bail for the accused, disagreements led to her stepping away.

In an official statement, Grover’s chamber reportedly emphasised adherence to professional ethics and legal standards as the basis for the withdrawal. "Due to intervening factors, the chamber of Advocate Vrinda Grover is constrained to withdraw from the case proceedings and will no longer represent the victim’s family," the statement read. The trial court has been informed, and the legal team formally discharged.

The victim’s father expressed surprise at the development, stating he was unaware of Grover’s decision.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), now overseeing the case after concerns about local investigations led to its transfer from Kolkata Police, informed the Supreme Court that the trial is expected to conclude within a month.

The case revolves around the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, whose body was discovered in a seminar room on August 9. An autopsy confirmed the crimes, and the CBI’s chargesheet, filed in October, named civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the prime accused. The Supreme Court first addressed the case on August 19.
