GUWAHATI: The tabling of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, February 13, led to a heated uproar and disruptions, forcing an adjournment of the session. The report triggered protests from Opposition MPs, resulting in the House being suspended until 11:20 AM. However, when proceedings resumed, fresh disruptions once again halted discussions.

Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his discontent over the unruly scenes, rebuking the protesting members. “You should learn some basic manners,” he remarked while addressing the disruptions.
The JPC, which reviewed the proposed amendments, had submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on January 31. The panel, chaired by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, adopted its findings by a 15-11 majority vote, incorporating recommendations from BJP members. However, the Opposition strongly opposed the amendments, accusing the committee of attempting to weaken Waqf boards.
Dissent notes were submitted by Opposition members, criticising the bill for allegedly infringing on the constitutional rights of the Muslim community and interfering with the autonomy of Waqf boards. The BJP, on the other hand, defended the legislation, stating that it aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the management of Waqf properties.
