Price Of Kaji Nemu Rises After Being Declared State Fruit

In a move celebrating Assam's rich agricultural heritage, the beloved lemon variety known as 'Kaji Nemu' was honoured as the state fruit in February. This declaration aims to elevate the cultural significance and economic value of this indigenous fruit, deeply rooted in Assamese tradition and cuisine.

Following this declaration, the price of Kaji Nemu has seen a substantial increase in the market. Currently, a single piece of lemon is priced between ₹10 and ₹20, a sharp rise from previous rates. What was once a staple ingredient in every household is now becoming a luxury item, affordable only to the elite.

Expressing concern, a resident of Ganeshguri remarked, "With the soaring prices, lemonade, a summer staple, will become a costly indulgence." Indeed, the rising costs are worrying many residents who rely on lemon for various culinary and health purposes.

Not long ago, three lemons were available for just ₹20, highlighting the stark difference in pricing due to its recent declaration of state fruit.

Kaji Nemu's newfound status is not without merit. The fruit has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognising its unique qualities and association with the region. Beyond its culinary uses, Kaji Nemu (citrus limon) is valued for its numerous health benefits. Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, it aids digestion, boosts immunity, and promotes overall well-being.

Amidst the fluctuating prices and changing dynamics, vendors are adapting to meet the demand. One vendor stated, "We are adjusting our prices to reflect the market changes and ensure continued access to this fruit for our customers."

Recalling the days, a senior citizen from Bongaon said, "Earlier times were better as we had trees in our backyard and often plucked fresh ones to enjoy with a meal. Now it has all turned out to be an urban gamble."

The bulk of the produce, which is around 70%, comes from Barpeta, the rest are collected from other places such as Rangia, Khetri etc.

While speaking to GPlus, an official from Pamohi Wholesale Vegetable market said, "The wholesale price for Kaji Nemu is ₹9.50 per piece. This price further escalates in the retail market due to the cost of transport and non-availability of stock. The cause of this sudden surge in rates is due to a shortfall in production because of scanty rain. Only after adequate rainfall, things will turn out to be better."

As Assam embraces Kaji Nemu as its state fruit, the rise in its prices underscores the need for a careful balance between cultural recognition and affordability for all residents.
