Panchayat Secretary Arrested For Taking Bribe in Assam's Bongaigaon

GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam, on Thursday, September 26 arrested Ranjit Kr Sarkar, Secretary of North Salmara Gaon Panchayat in Bongaigaon, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹7,000.

He was caught red-handed at his Srijangram office after accepting a contractor's bribe, the Directorate said.


The contractor had lodged a complaint alleging Sarkar had demanded bribe to clear the pending bills. The contractor had resisted the illegal demand and approached the Vigilance Directorate, which organised a sting operation to catch Sarkar red-handed.

The Directorate through a post shared on X, formerly Twitter confirmed the arrest stating, "Today @DIR_VAC_ASSAM trapped red handed Ranjit Kr. Sarkar, Secretary, North Salmara Gaon Panchayat, Dist- Bongaigaon in the office after he accepted a bribe from the complainant in connection with processing of bills".
