OpenAI CEO Rejects $97.4 Billion Acquisition Bid From Elon Musk

GUWAHATI: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has rejected a $97.4 billion acquisition offer from a group of investors led by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. The bid would have granted Musk control of OpenAI, but Altman swiftly dismissed it, instead proposing to buy Twitter for $9.74 billion.

“No thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want,” Altman posted.

The rejection adds to the growing tension between Musk and Altman over differing views on the future of artificial intelligence (AI). Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, has criticised the company's shift from a nonprofit, open-source model to a more closed-source, profit-driven strategy under Altman's leadership.

"I don't trust OpenAI and Sam Altman. I don't think we want to have the most powerful AI in the world controlled by someone who is not trustworthy," Musk said, expressing concerns about the direction of AI development.

He also expressed concerns about OpenAI’s shift from its original nonprofit, open-source model, to a more closed-source, profit-driven approach, further stating, "The 'Open' in OpenAI is supposed to mean 'open source'. And it was created as a nonprofit open source. And now it is a closed-source for maximum profit, which I think is not good karma."

The counter-offer to buy Twitter, while likely a tongue-in-cheek response, highlights the ongoing rivalry between the two prominent figures in the tech industry.
