Northeast and Assam makes a mark in Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards 2017

GUWAHATI: The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind will be conferring the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards 2017 at Rashtrapati Bhawan in a special investiture ceremony on February 6, Wednesday.

From North-east India, artists Ramkrishna Talukdar for Sattriya dance and L.N.Oinam Ongbi Dhoni Devi for Manipuri dance have been selected in the field of dance along with nine other artists. 

For theatre, Shougrakpam Hemanta Singh has been selected for Shumang Leela, a performing arts style from Manipur for the Other Major Traditions of Theatre category. 

In the field of Traditional,Folk,Tribal Music,Dance, Theatre and Puppetry, two of the ten artists selected for the award are from north-east India.  Jagannath Bayan has been selected for traditional music. He is from Khol, Assam and, K.C. Runremsangi has been selected in the Folk Music category. He hails from Mizoram.

The honour of the Akademi Awards has been conferred on artists since 1952. This honour not only symbolizes the highest standard of excellence and achievements but also recognizes sustained individual work and contribution. 

The honour of the Akademi Award also carries with it a prize of Rs 1,00,000/- (Rupees one lakh) besides a Tamrapatra and Angavastram.
