GUWAHATI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) assumed responsibility for investigating three critical cases linked to the recent violence in Manipur, which resulted in loss of life and widespread disruption of public order. The agency took over these cases from the Manipur Police following an order from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), as the violent incidents had escalated in recent months, leading to fatalities and significant social unrest in the region.

The cases include a gun battle between the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Kuki militants in the Jiribam area, where at least 10 militants were killed. Another case involved the abduction of six people in Jiribam, whose bodies were later discovered. The NIA registered a separate case regarding this abduction. The six bodies were later recovered. The third case is yet to be disclosed.

In response to the growing instability in the region, the MHA transferred the cases to the NIA. The agency is now tasked with leading the investigations and examining the circumstances surrounding the violence, with a focus on its broader implications for peace and security in Manipur.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a review meeting with senior officials on Sunday, November 17, regarding the recent flare-ups of violence in the state. Reports suggested that he instructed officials to take all necessary measures to restore peace in the northeastern state. A further meeting with top officers was scheduled for Monday to determine additional steps to address the situation.

Earlier, on November 16, the MHA had issued a notification expressing concern over the fragile security situation in Manipur. Armed groups from both communities in conflict had been involved in violent activities, leading to further loss of life and disruption of public order. Security forces were directed to take the required steps to restore peace, with the MHA warning of strict action against those responsible for violent and disruptive behaviour. The public was urged to remain calm, avoid rumours, and cooperate with security forces to maintain law and order in the state.
