GUWAHATI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is set to conduct a camp sitting at the Administrative Staff College in Guwahati on November 17, dedicated to hearing cases of human rights violations in the northeastern states.

Simultaneously, the commission is actively engaging local self-governments, imparting knowledge on various human rights aspects. A national conference, titled “Advancing Human Rights through Local Self-Governments,” is scheduled for November 16, with NHRC India Chairperson Justice Arun Mishra, members Dnyaneshwar M Mulay, Rajiv Jain, and Secretary General Bharat Lal in attendance.

The conference will witness the participation of state human rights commission chairpersons from Assam, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Sikkim, alongside senior officers from central and state governments. NHRC India aims to use the platform to hold discussions and sessions focusing on the critical role of local self-governments in advancing human rights.

NHRC India's leadership will engage in meetings with chief secretaries, DGPs, and senior officers of the eight northeastern states. The primary agenda is to review the implementation of NHRC's advisories and recommendations, emphasising the protection and promotion of human rights across the states.

During the camp sitting on November 17, NHRC India officials will address over 40 pending cases of human rights violations. State authorities and concerned complainants have been urged to participate in the hearings.

The camp setting is designed to sensitise state officials about human rights issues and foster interaction with NGOs and Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) beyond case hearings. Past camp sittings have been held in various states, including Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Assam.
