Originally scheduled to take effect on April 1, the annual revision of highway user fees was postponed due to the Lok Sabha elections.

The adjustment in toll rates is part of NHAI's annual exercise to revise fees in line with changes in the wholesale price index (WPI)-based inflation. This year's hike reflects an average increase of 5 per cent.

India's national highway network comprises approximately 855 user fee plazas where tolls are collected under the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. Of these, around 675 are public-funded fee plazas, while 180 are operated by private concessionaires.
