Netflix's Indrani Mukerjea Documentary Release Stalled Till Next Week

GUWAHATI: The Bombay High Court has directed the producers of Netflix documentary series “Buried Truth – The Indrani Mukerjea Story” to hold a special screening for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), while hearing the agency's plea against the release of the series.

After High Court’s order, Netflix has postponed the release date of the documentary series until next week’s Thursday.

The plea was being heard by Justice Revati Mohite-Dere who questioned why the CBI should not be allowed to view the documentary, which is from the perspective of the prime accused of the Sheena Bora murder case and depicts her version of the case.

Justice Dere further raised doubts about whether an accused has the right to release such content during the course of the trial and if it violated any bail conditions.

“One of the bail conditions is not to tamper with evidence. When you give your story and interview people in support of your case... What is difficulty in sharing?… There are witnesses yet to be examined. Do we only see the right of the accused? What about the right of the victim?” observed the Court.

CBI had argued that the release of the documentary-series would influence witnesses and impact the ongoing trial, especially considering that the makers admitted that five witnesses are interviewed in the docuseries, even as CBI has only examined three of these witnesses while two others are yet to be examined.

Netflix contended in their defense that allowing CBI to view the film or stall its release would amount to pre-censorship and that the documentary only depicts what is already available in the public domain, while further stating that the rights of the accused should take precedence over the prosecution's rights.
