NCERT In Soup As Textbook Associates Manipur’s Traditional Sport With Mizoram

 

GUWAHATI: The Manipur government is likely to address with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) about an error in one of its textbooks that identifies 'Mukna-Kangjei', a traditional Manipuri game, as originating from Mizoram.

The state authority noticed the misidentification and plans to take up the issue with the NCERT. BJP legislator Rajkumar Imo Singh highlighted the "gross error" and urged Manipur's Education Minister Basanta Kumar Singh to engage with the central government to correct the record.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Singh, the son-in-law of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, pointed out that Mukna-Kangjei is a traditional sport of Manipur that combines elements of wrestling and hockey. He expressed concern that NCERT's misclassification might impact the recognition of Manipuri culture and traditions.

The legislator urged the state education minister to take swift action and ensure the correction of such errors in NCERT publications and to prevent their recurrence.

In response to the misidentification, the Physical Education Teachers’ Association emphasised the importance of accuracy in educational materials, especially those related to cultural heritage and indigenous games. The association called on government authorities to take appropriate measures to rectify the error.
