GUWAHATI: In yet another milestone for Narayana Hospital (NH) Guwahati, surgeons of the superspeciality hospital successfully operated on a patient suffering from a rare abdominal tumour.

The surgery was performed by consultant G.I oncosurgeons Dr Digvijoy Sarma and Dr Saikat Mallik along with anaesthetists Dr Imdad Hussain and Dr Swapnil.

The patient, one Mr Ranjit Kr Singha, hailing from Silchar, was found to be suffering from a large gastrointestinal tumour (GIST) arising from the large intestines. GIST of large intestines is an extremely rare occurrence, accounting for less than one percent of such tumours. Mr Singh was also diagnosed with severe hypothyroidism increasing the risk of anaesthesia application and surgery.

Following this, the multidisciplinary team of G.I oncosurgeons, anaesthetists and endocrinologists worked together to optimise him before the major surgery involving laparotomy and complete resection of the tumor with an uneventful perioperative period.

The department of Surgical Gastroenterology and G.I Oncology at NH performs major surgeries regularly for complex gastrointestinal diseases including cancers of G.I tract, liver, pancreas and biliary system.

The department has state of art infrastructure and facilities and experience to treat such diseases with a high rate of success.
