Myanmar Earthquake Leaves At Least 60 Dead, Authorities Seek International Aid

 

GUWAHATI: At least 60 dead and over 50 are reported to have been injured after Myanmar was struck by two earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 6.4 on the Richter scale on Friday, March 28.The situation has left the Myanmar government seeking for international aid.

“We want the international community to give humanitarian aid as soon as possible," ruling party spokesman Zaw Min Tun reportedly said while visiting a hospital that was declared a “mass casualty area” due to the influx of injured people.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre was located in central Myanmar, about 50 kilometres east of Monywa. The tremors extended beyond the nation’s borders, affecting parts of Thailand, China’s Yunnan province, and several regions in India as well, including Kolkata, Imphal in Manipur, and Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills. Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka and Chattogram were also recipients of the tremors.

In Myanmar’s Mandalay region, the iconic Ava Bridge collapsed, and a mosque partially caved in, killing at least three people. Multiple buildings collapsed, and roads developed large cracks.

The earthquake killed three people in Thailand after an under-construction skyscraper collapsed in Bangkok following the earthquake. Several workers are reportedly still trapped under the debris.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the disaster and assured Myanmar of India's assistance. He also directed Indian authorities to remain on standby for any emergency support.
