GUWAHATI: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu engaged in a discussion with linguistic organisations representing various communities, including Mising, Rabha, Tiwa, Deuri, Karbi, Dimasa, Hmar, and Garo. The primary objective of the meeting was to finalise a roadmap for introducing these languages as the medium of instruction in the preparatory stages of school education.
A consensus has been reached to adopt a multilingual approach, allowing students to commence their primary education in their mother tongue and subsequently transition to regional or English languages for secondary school education. This strategic move aligns with the language education strategy outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020.
The discussions during the meeting also focused on the roadmap presented by the Sahitya Sabhas of Assam regarding Language Education Strategy at the Foundational Stage. The event was organised by the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) in Guwahati.
Key figures present at the meeting included Advisor to the Department of Education, Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Secretary Narayan Konwar, SCERT Director Niroda Devi, and Phanindra Jidung, Director of Bodo and Other Tribal Languages.
